Captain’s Day 2019

Crossgar Golf Club played host this week to Leslie Watson’s Captains Day a fortnight after being cancelled due to weather. It was sunshine all the way as the bumper crowd competed for the clubs most coveted prize.

A stiff breeze made scoring tricky and it became evident from early on that a sub 40 point score may be enough to win the title.
Young Adam Withers got his round off to a flyer with birdies at the first two holes and despite a few hiccups along the way held it together to post the clubhouse lead with 39 points off his handicap of 6. It wasn’t until the afternoon when conditions eased slightly that the lead was threatened with both Paul Johnston and Graham Walsh recording 38 points to fill the 4th and 3rd placed spots respectively.
The biggest threat though came in the form of 8 handicapper Neil Brown who made the turn with 20 points and despite a birdie at the last was left to rue two ‘dings’ on the back nine to agonisingly lose out to young Withers who was the worthy champion on the day.
David Watson predictably won the gross with Rodney Orr winning the guest Prize.
The past Captains Prize went to Paddy Bell whilst Jimmy Keenan won the equivalent for the committee members. Front and back nines were won respectively by John Lyons and Mark Withers.
Young Curtis Watson was the juvenile winner with big hitting Paul Bell capturing the longest drive.
There was also nearest the pins for all par 3’s with these going the way of Neil Brown, Davy Watson, Paul Sob and Stevie Rice.

The Ladies event was also very hotly contested with again count back having to be applied to separate the front two. The popular winner was Rosie Boulter with a very respectable 36 points with Joan Dickson having to settle for the runners-up spot on the same score.
Samantha Coulter and Maeve Fay respectively won the best front and back nine prize prizes for the Ladies with Joyce Dodd winning the Ladies committee prize.
Rebecca Morrison won the Ladies longest drive.

A large crowd turned out for the evening presentation and they enjoyed a very humorous speech from the usually reserved Captain who paid particular thanks to his wife Charlotte for her support throughout the year but most importantly on the day with the catering with the aid of her many helpers who did a sterling job. He also thanked his elderly mother who attended on the night to support him on his big day.
Following the presentation the crowd danced the night away to the talented band Drive.
